First thing first, you don't have to be Italian to live la dolce vita.
My dad lived in Italy for a nearly a decade when he was a young man, and as such learnt to speak Italian (as well as eat and drink Italian). The result was that my childhood was commonly filled with dinner being announced with Ragazzi, andiamo!
I don’t have any Italian heritage but both my wife, Lyndall and I have a deep love of Italy – you could call us Italophiles. So much so that we were married in Rome, it was truly an amazing experience.

But my love of digestivi (after-dinner drinks) was developed on trips far earlier than our wedding. On one particular trip to Sicily, in addition to finding and falling for Amaro, I developed a love for the more spicy and complex handmade limoncello on offer in this part of Italy. Part of our honeymoon saw us return to Sicily, and stay at an agriturismo filled with citrus groves and making some of the best limoncello I’ve ever tasted.
Upon return to Tasmania, I started researching growing lemons and found that unlike apples and cherries there isn’t a thriving citrus industry in Tassie. But, this hasn’t stopped countless families reaping the benefit of backyard lemon trees for generations. So in our neighbourhood of Moonah with abundant fruit, plus the outstanding family of distillers in Tasmania we started Osare.
Osare (pronounced o’ za-ray) in Italian, means to dare. Dare is both my son and my maternal grandfather’s middle name. We produce Liquori, alcoholic drinks with natural flavours obtained through infusion, not to be confused with overly sweet liqueurs. Our aim is to extract the pure flavours of our island home in bottled form.
Our liquori include both Aperitivi and Digestivi: before dinner spirits made for mixing into cocktails and after dinner spirits and liqueurs made to sip on after multiple courses. Osare liquori are hand-made with a simple process, so that every bottle can be shared with food, family and friends to bring back fond memories or make new ones.
